On Monday, May 18, 1925, in the presence of 155 Odd Fellows, the Mayor of the City of Norman, Guy Spottswood, welcomed the International Order of Odd Fellows, and presented us with the keys to the city. Spottswood, was an Odd Fellow (as well as a Freemason, Elk, Modern Woodsman, and a member of the Norman Lions Club).
The best commentary on this moment was from “The Wilderness News” a renegade publication that was mimeographed and distributed to the attendees of the Grand Lodge Sessions:
You’ll have to hand it to the Odd Fellows for being diplomats. An investigation has revealed that, as far as is known, none of the the visiting delegates brought their wives along. They evidently believed the announcement that the keys of the city would be surrendered to them.
