Frequently Asked Questions

Building Bonds Since 1891

Find answers to your questions about
Norman Lodge, Odd Fellowship and our community mission.

What is the purpose of being an Odd Fellow?

Our tenants are to: “visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan”.

But the benefits of fraternalism reaches so much further. You will meet new people, develop new skills and learn more about the needs of your community.

How do I become a member?

We are an “Initiatic Order;” to become a member, you must submit to the same experience that those that have come before you have experienced. It involves petitioning, undergoing an extensive interview, being accepted and experiencing our ceremonies. We highly recommend reviewing the Resources for Candidates page prior to petitioning our Lodge.

How are you different from other Initiatic Organizations?

Unlike other organizations (Freemasons, Elks, Eagles, etc.) we have a foundational business (cemeteries) that we actually support and promote. Officers of the IOOF are Board Members that help to run and operate the cemetery and employees of the IOOF cemetery are granted membership in our organization.

Do I have to be an Odd Fellow to be buried in the IOOF Cemetery?

No, our cemetery is available to everyone. However, becoming an Odd Fellow might entitle you to additional benefits (spousal death benefits, survivor benefits, gravestone markers, etc.) unavailable to the general public.

What types of activities does the lodge organize?

We hold meetings, perform community service projects, participate in statewide initiatives and organize social events throughout the year.

Where can I find more information?

We welcome you to come down to our building 30 minutes prior to our business meeting. Also, we highly recommend the NetFlix documentary Join or Die, which talks about the importance of fraternalism and visits actual Odd Fellows Lodges.
